　　軟啟動器（soft starter）是一種集電機軟起動、軟停車、輕載節能和多種保護功能于一體的新穎電機控制裝置，國外稱為Soft Starter。它的主要構成是串接于電源與被控電機之間的三相反并聯閘管及其電子控制電路。運用不同的方法，控制三相反并聯閘管的導通角，使被控電機的輸入電壓按不同的要求而變化，就可實現不同的功能。軟起動器和變頻器是兩種完全不同用途的產品。變頻器是用于需要調速的地方，其輸出不但改變電壓而且同時改變頻率；軟起動器實際上是個調壓器，用于電機起動時，輸出只改變電壓并沒有改變頻率。變頻器具備所有軟起動器功能，但它的價格比軟起動器貴得多，結構也復雜得多。電動機軟起動器是運用串接于電源與被控電機之間的軟起動器，控制其內部晶閘管的導通角，使電機輸入電壓從零以預設函數關系逐漸上升，直至起動結束，賦予電機全電壓，即為軟起動，在軟起動過程中，電機起動轉矩逐漸增加，轉速也逐漸增加。
